Multi-Line clamps from STAUFF

Secure fastening of low-pressure supply lines under the passenger compartment of passenger carriages

The doors of regional and long-distance trains, suburban trains and subway trains should open and close quietly, the indoor climate and lighting in the compartment should be pleasant and any sanitary facilities and on-board bistros should be able to access fresh water.

In passenger carriages, the necessary functional systems are often installed in the so-called underfloor area, i.e. directly under the floor panel visible to the passenger.

Accordingly, various supply lines such as electrical cables, water, pneumatic and other low-pressure lines are also laid here.

Multi-Line clamps from STAUFF in rail transportation

Simultaneous installation of up to six cables with identical or different diameters

This is precisely where STAUFF Multi-Line clamps type MLC come into play, i.e. under the passenger compartment:

These multiple clamps are designed to accommodate either two, three, four or six cables of identical or different diameters, making them perfect for simple yet secure fastening of different cable types.

Incidentally, these multiple clamps are also often referred to on the market as multiple strips, multiple clamps, terminal blocks or simply multi-clamps.

Advantages of MLC Multi-Line clamps from STAUFF

What are the advantages of using STAUFF MLC Multi-Line clamps instead of standard DIN clamps, which can only be used to fasten a maximum of two cables per clamp body?

Multi-Line clamps require a significantly smaller number of individual parts. And this statement does not just refer to the number of clamp bodies required. For example, Multi-Line clamps for six cables are fastened with just three screws. For six DIN clamps of the standard series arranged next to each other in accordance with DIN 3015 (Part 1), a total of 12 screws would be required.

The number of cover plates or welding plates, rail nuts, locking plates, mounting screws, other adaptors and other accessories is correspondingly lower.

This naturally also has an impact on the overall weight and the required installation space of the clamp, which is significantly influenced by its overall length. For a size 3 Multi-Line clamp for six cables, this is exactly 216 mm. In comparison, six DIN clamps from the standard series arranged next to each other, which would accommodate the same number of cables, are exactly 300 mm long.

And, of course, fewer components to install also means less installation time!

STAUFF MLC clamps are available in three standard sizes for all common metric and imperial cable diameters from 1/4" to 1" (6 to 25.4 mm). Each size can accommodate between two and six cables, also with different outer diameters on request.

Preventive Fire Protection

Flame-retardant properties of MLC Multi-Line clamps from STAUFF

STAUFF Multi-Line clamps type MLC are usually made of flame-retardant polyamide (PA-V0) in black for rail transport. With this and other materials, STAUFF meets all the usual European standards for preventive fire protection in rail transportation:

  • European Standard EN 45545-2
  • German industry standard DIN 5510-2
  • British Standard BS 6853
  • Norme Française NF F 16-101

International requirements can also be met, including

  • NFPA 130 ("Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems"
of the us National Fire Protection Association)
  • Specifications of the JRMA (Japan Railway Rolling Stock & Machinery Association)

For less safety-critical applications outside the rail vehicle industry, clamp body materials without explicit fire protection properties are of course also available, e.g. polypropylene (PP) or polyamide (PA).

Metal Parts for Multi-Line Clamps from STAUFF

All metal parts required for attaching STAUFF MLC Multi-Line clamps to the system are available in mild steel and stainless steel.

Welding plates made of mild steel are usually supplied in a phosphated finish.

However, Multi-Line clamps can also be used in mounting rails or other substructures. Direct mounting on the system itself is also possible.

Cover plates are also available in mild steel with STAUFF zinc/nickel coating or in stainless steel. However, these are not absolutely essential, particularly when fixing low-pressure pipes or electrical cables.

Other metal parts can be adopted one-to-one from original STAUFF clamps from the standard series established on the market for many decades in accordance with DIN 3015 (Part 1): Hexagon bolts, surface-mounted bolts, locking plates, rail nuts and support rails, CRA adaptors and mounting rails. Of course, these components are also available in mild steel and stainless steel without restriction.
